I taught myself the Life and Death theme from LOST today

I plucked away at it alone in my parents house while I waited for them to return, playing on my grandparents old piano that hasn’t been tuned in twenty years.

[No one in my family plays. Only my dad knows how.]

I believe / hope this inclination came more from my strangely-still-passionate and unbridled affection for the show, than from some desire to apply a pop-cultural signifier for loss and tragedy to today’s family death.

I wouldn’t put that past me, though.

I only learned the simple part. Not the left hand chords (though I got farther there than I expected, being musically inept).

As of this writing, I should point out, I’ve cried as much for Jin Kwon on the exploding freighter as I did for my grandmother (not at all). This is uncharacteristic for me on both accounts.

Regardless. This is the third song I’ve taught myself. Before it I had groped my way through the main theme of Halloween and the Campbell’s Soup song (also, I later realized, from Big). This time I had the benefit of an iPhone (that fit so very nicely in the sheet music slot), but it is a much more complex song.
